No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
