Each time a major honors show draws close, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
